Forest fires are running rampent in Colorado this summer. The one just outside of Pagosa Springs was one of the first to start and is the 2nd biggest. Thankfully though, it’s 13 miles from the city, far from most structures, and they have been able to keep it fairly contained. Most days we just see wisps of smoke or haze over the mountains. Today though, the smoke billowed and drifted all along the mountains (this picture only shows a portion of the cloud of smoke).
It’s sad to see so much destruction, to have parts of the forest off limits, and to be in a fire ban, but the forest (at least this one) badly needs a clean up. The pine beetles have killed so many trees and continue to cause destruction. Fire is one of the only ways to get rid of them and clear out the forest. A tricky balance.
